Our client, Makivik Corporation, is a non-profit association created in 1978 pursuant to the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement. Their mandate is to protect the rights and interests of Inuit of Nunavik, administer the compensation funds under the terms of various agreements and treaties, and to use those funds to promote economic and social development of the Inuit society in Nunavik. Their work also focuses on the protection of Inuit language and culture. Makivik Corporation owns large profitable business enterprises generating jobs, including two airline companies and a company in the field of construction, and also has interests in the fishing industry and the maritime transportation industry.
In order to continue its mission, Makivik Corporation is looking to add a Legal Counsel to its team. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will work from the office located in the City of Saint-Laurent and will be involved in commercial as well as transactional work. You will be responsible for negotiating, drafting, and revising various commercial agreements, including joint venture agreements, leases, purchase/sale, etc. You will take part in mergers and acquisitions beginning with the negotiation stage as well as preparing required documentation and performing due diligence. You will also act as the advisor to the various subsidiaries and entities of the company and will ensure the compliance of their activities with applicable legislation. You will also, to a lesser extent, manage any litigation files in collaboration with external lawyers.

You must be a member of the Bar of Quebec and have at least 7 years of relevant experience. Having knowledge of Aboriginal rights as well as the airline industry will be considered a valuable asset. You must be bilingual, both orally and in writing to qualify. Please note that occasional travel to Nunavik is expected.
