Description:The Law Society of British Columbia (Law Society) regulates the legal profession in BC, protecting the public interest in the administration of justice by setting and enforcing standards of professional conduct for lawyers. Importantly, the Law Society also brings a voice to issues affecting the justice system and the delivery of legal services. With close to 200 employees, the Law Society responds to public concerns and complaints about lawyers and ensures lawyers meet their professional obligations by enforcing professional standards and providing assistance to the legal profession. Enhancing public confidence in the legal profession is a key objective of the Law Society. With the conclusion of a successful and long-term tenure of the incumbent, the Law Society is now looking for a new Chief Legal Officer to take the organization forward to its next stage of development. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) will lead an experienced public interest counsel group in carrying out the Law Society’s statutory responsibilities of discipline, professional conduct, custodianships and unauthorized practice. The CLO also plays an important role in anticipating external trends and developments that will impact the public interest and will work to guide the profession to best address related and changing needs. The CLO is also the key point of contact for external counsel. The CLO will work to support the team (four managers, 27 lawyers and 39 staff) in their efforts to continually enhance the quality of response to public concerns as well as the quality and timeliness of enforcement and relationships within the legal profession. Through the exemplary leadership of the CLO and the CLO’s team, the Law Society will be seen as the “go to” place for lawyers with a passion for serving the public interest in their profession. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of success in a role of considerable scope and breadth in which the legal profession or regulation has been central to the role. Roles could include those found within professional regulatory bodies, crown agencies, governments, corporate legal units, or other bodies related to the legal profession or the public’s interface with the profession. Qualified to practice law in BC, the next CLO will bring exceptional leadership and communication skills and sensitivity to political and interpersonal nuances. He/she must have the ability to influence and create results through collaboration with managers, lawyers, board members, and the public.
